Bob took Lucky to the groomer. He left him there and came home. When he entered the house he said, "Sit down. We have to talk". I thought something terrible must have happened to Lucky, like he got loose and ran in front of a car, or something. We sat together on the couch and Bob turned to me, taking both of my hands in his. Looking me directly in the eye he asked, "Would you like another dog?" I was so relieved that it wasn't something bad, and because I really would like another dog, I instantly replied, "yes, of course." He said that there was a dog who was being groomed in preparation for being taken to the pound. The owner was moving and had five dogs and could only take two of them with her. I went with Bob to the grooming facility and met the little guy. A small, white and blond, mixed breed little guy with the coat and eyes of a Maltese and the chest and teeth of a bulldog. His lower jaw was filled with large protruding teeth. He was twelve years old. The day after we adopted him I became seriously ill and spent ten days sleeping in a chair. He slept on my lap almost the entire time and we bonded in a most amazing way. He is now about twenty years old, and we have had the most amazing, loving relationship over the years. We have spent thousands of dollars on vet bills, and he almost crossed over the rainbow bridge more than once, but he is still with us and has a relatively comfortable and happy life despite his age. He has diabetes, and I give him insulin shots twice a day. I just bought a pet stroller for him because he has a little difficulty in his hind legs and tires easily so cannot go for walks anymore. This way he can still go around the neighborhood with me. He has been worth every dollar spent on his care, and worth every sleepless night I have spent caring for him when he was unwell. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. I hope people will read this and adopt a senior dog.

I have always LOVED the story about Bob bringing Sammy home.
