A few years ago I sent my husband, Bob, and son, Tommy, to the store for milk. When they came home I was in the bathroom and heard my daughter, Heidi, call out, "Mom, Dad brought a DOG home. " There was a bit of derision in her tone of voice. She dearly loved the dogs we had, but didn't welcome anything new into her life, as she is dealing with her autism. A new dog would be an intrusion on her strictly structured life.
I opened the front door to find Bob on the front deck holding a small blond puppy. It looked like a miniature version of the movie star dog, Benji. It looked at me with big, pleading eyes, and for me it was love at first sight as I took him it in my arms.
"I came out of the store and there was a woman holding him. She said she had rescued him from the middle of the highway . He was dodging big trucks. She said she couldn't keep him or even take him to a shelter because her own dog was in her car and would not allow another dog in the car."
Of course, we kept him. More about that in a future blog and possibly a future book.
